After a week in Austin of work, food, and friends, we were off to China. I was scheduled for a work conference in Shanghai for one week, before going to Beijing and Hong Kong the following week for fun. The routing wasn’t too bad. We went Austin to Chicago and then a 14 hour flight from Chicago to Shanghai. We didn’t get upgraded, but we were fortunate to be by ourselves in two seats in the 777 seating formation.
I tried to get some rest on the flight, but that wasn’t overly successful. I spent a good chunk of the flight doing some reading to prepare for a couple of business simulations for my conference and otherwise did some reading and played Scrabble with Jenn. I only ended up watching one movie, Midnight in Paris. We’d been wanting to see it for a while, but hadn’t had the opportunity since it never made it to Bratislava. The movie is about a writer, Owen Wilson, who is in Paris with his fiancĂ©, Rachel McAdams, and her parents, and is trying to find inspiration and finds it by traveling back in time to the 1920’s at the stroke of midnight each evening. He hangs out with Hemingway, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Picasso, and others in this fantasy world that gives Woody Allen the opportunity to show off a bit with his writing. The script is clever and Owen Wilson is likeable. I enjoy (some) Woody Allen movies, but it seemed reviewers were so hungry for a good Wood Allen movie that they way maybe rated this one a little too high. Don't get me wrong, I liked it. The movie was very entertaining. Annie Hall, it is not, but it doesn’t have to be. Jenn and I both loved all the shots of the different neighborhoods and sights in Paris.
The food on the flight was forgettable. I literally can’t remember what I had. I occasionally bring food with me on the flight and I think that may become my routine going forward. I bought a bag of raisins from the hotel store on Friday night and ate about half of them.
